This re-raised the classic cosmetic enhancement questions, “How long do breast implants last?” & “How often should a woman replace her implants?”

With a variety of breast implant options available, and of course a customized treatment plan in place, it is important for moms to understand the process and the basics for breast augmentation.

There is a great deal of confusion regarding the longevity behind how long breast implants will last. There are even myths and misconceptions revolving around implants. To clear the air, there is no exact limit. Yes, there are suggested recommendations based on the type of implant and your personalized plan and circumstances, but that is to be determined by your board-certified surgeon and quality patient care team. Most women opt to change their implants every ten years or so as per research of certain manufacturers and plastic surgery societies. After all, it is a man-made product.  However, many surgeons have patients who experience zero problems well past the decade mark. Each individual patient is different and if they are not causing you problems, and you are happy with the look and feel, it should not be a serious concern.

Working mothers who have breast implants often times do not follow the principle of replacing their implants every ten years simply because time does not allow, and with little or no discomfort, the benefits and/or their well-being usually falls below the family’s best interest on the priority scale. Although, most women are content with their original implant and do not require additional surgery, that does not mean women should not be aware of potential risks, or follow the proper maintenance for implants. There is no way to predict the exact outcome down the road. Women, especially mothers, should be mindful of their body’s reaction over time. It is suggested to follow-up throughout the lifetime of the implants, but that does not necessarily mean more surgical downtime.

On the other end of the spectrum, mothers who are rescheduling their consultations and updating their implants are concerned with the overall appearance as they age and their body goes through continual changes. Many patients choose to replace their implants because of the natural effects of aging. All breasts, whether natural or implanted, are subject to gravity, sun damage, lost tissue connectivity and the physical effects of motherhood.

Time-related changes often include breast sagging, size change due to hormonal fluctuations, or visible rippling of the implants. Women who received implants before motherhood may discover that pregnancy and breastfeeding change the original appearance of their breast implants. Thus, a number of patients voluntarily return after they are through having children, wanting to restore their breasts to the look and feel of the original implants.

As with any other type of surgery, patients can mitigate some of the risk of complications by selecting a surgeon who is board-certified, well-experienced and has a respected presence in the medical community. Make sure you put your beauty in hands you can trust!
