arm-liftAn arm lift, otherwise known as a brachioplasty, can be a great solution for anyone, who has been through a significant weight gain and/or loss. It can also be very beneficial to those who are getting older, or because of hereditary factors, have developed saggy, drooping upper arms.

Even if exercise and dieting can help you tone and shape your hands, the skin might already be lacking elasticity to adapt to the new hand shape. This is where an arm lift comes in – it can reduce excessive skin and fat on the upper arm, and re-shape it to make it look natural. This procedure can often be combined with other cosmetic procedures for a more defines appearance and optimal results.

The Ideal Candidate for an Arm Lift

The ideal candidate for an arm lift is NOT someone who may fall under the category of obese. An arm lift procedure is most effective to those individuals who have reached or are within the reach of their overall target goal weight, but struggling to loose the last of their excess or need the skin tightened to achieve their final objective.

There are generally two common types of patients; those who have lost a significant amount of weight and have now obtained a stable, healthy weight, or those who have a large amount of excess skin due to their genetics. Dr. Steinbrech will offer you the insight to the best technique to eliminate this excess skin and what treatment or procedures are right for you, your circumstance, and your ultimate desire.

This procedure is recommended for patients who are in good overall health, do not smoke and do not have any existing medical conditions that may interfere with this procedure. It is important for patients to also have realistic expectations in order to produce successful results from this procedure.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed at the JCAHO accredited office-based surgery facility, which is located at Gotham Plastic Surgery, New York City.

General anesthesia or IV sedation might be required.

For patients with a fair amount of excess fat and skin, a standard brachioplasty incision is made on the inside of the upper arm, in between the elbow and the underarm.. The incision is usually placed on the inside of the arm in the bicep muscle groove in order to minimize the appearance of a potential scar. The incision size will depend on the amount of skin and fat that needs to be removed, and on the location of it. After the incision is made, excess skin is excised, and if needed, excess fat is removed with liposuction.

The entire procedure takes about two hours to perform, and patients can usually return home the same day the same day.

Post Surgery

After the arm lift procedure, some bruising and swelling might be present, along with pain or other discomfort which can be mitigated with prescribed medication. This is standard and mild in effect and typically will heal or go away on their own within a few days. Most of the patients are able to return to their work and other everyday activities within a week, but a compression garment will have to be worn for a few weeks to allow the hand to heal properly and completely.

The results of this procedure are visible immediately, and will continue to improve as the swelling subsides and the scars mature. Patients often feel more comfortable exposing their arms and have improved self-confidence following this procedure.
